Q&A with Hannah Lange
Hannah is a mumma, a picnic expert and a big lover of nature. She talks about the real life struggles that come with building your business and the importance of connecting with mother nature along the way.
Q: Hannah, you create the most beautiful, bespoke picnics! Can you tell us all about your boutique picnic service?
A: Picnics by Hannah is a pop-up picnic and platter service in the Blue Mountains. We create magical picnics and platters for couples and group celebrations. We pride ourselves on creating a fully unique experience for our customers, whether it be for a romantic date or a big baby shower.
Q: You are often booked out which is fantastic, when did you realise that this was going to be a huge hit and how did that make you feel?
A: I still don’t feel like it’s successful (true Virgo/perfectionist here). At the beginning of the year I remember looking at my calendar and realising I was almost booked out 3 months in a row. I cried with happy tears that people wanted to enjoy this experience, something I had created myself. There is no satisfaction quite like it!
Q: What are some important lessons that you have learned along the way?
A: I learned very quickly that I still needed to put my family first. Running your own business is a 24/7 thing and lots of the time people don’t understand that you are one person and that you can’t answer an Instagram message at 4am on a Sunday morning. I love my customers and most of the time it is a very positive experience, but I am very strict with having set work hours and not spend too much time on my phone when I am with my family. I started this business because I love being creative and to spend more time with my son. So I try to stick to these core values as much as I can.
Q: Tell us about the most exciting event you have planned thus far?
A: This is a tough one! I think putting together a picnic for Elise Cook and Dom Palumba was a real highlight for me. I admire Elise and Dom so much for their lifestyle and free spirit I felt completely honoured to be able to create something special for them.
Q: We would love to hear more on your experiences of juggling your growing business, with your growing family?
A: I just wing it! Every day is different and I do a lot of admin work at night. With my new bub due in November I’m up for a whole new challenge. My husband and son spend weekends together adventuring so I am free to do my picnic set-ups. It helps a lot! I’ve also just hired my first staff member and I couldn’t have asked for a better person to help me out!
Q: You create a magical place for people to escape to. How important is it for people to take some time away from the hustle and why?
A: I think it’s so important to reconnect with nature and also for couples to take a moment to just spend time in each others company. It can make the world of difference. I use to live in the city and there's just something about changing pace - even if just for the day. It’s revitalising!
Q: The Launch Gals is a movement that encourages women who want more, to find it or create it for themselves, what would you say to the women who may be scared to take that next step?
A: I think you just have to think ‘what have I got to lose?’. If you are unhappy with your life or what you are doing change it. I know sometimes it’s not as simple as that but small steps can create a big change. I left school when I was 14 because I wanted to be a makeup artist. My school principal told me ‘you’ll never amount to anything’. Well, I have a University Degree and a long list of successful career decisions and now a very satisfying business that I enjoy so much! I think our minds and other people can create negativity, but if you harness it and make it your driving force you can do or be anything you want to!
Just for a bit of fun!
Q: When I face a big challenge…
A: Procrastinate and eat lots of chocolate!
Q: The most courageous thing I’ve ever done as a woman is…
A: Become a mum. If you are a fellow mum you get me right? Labour and newborns make us god damn superheroes! I deserve a medal… we all do.
Q: The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…
A: I can’t think of anything because I am pretty good at ignoring peoples advice haha.
Q: My BGP (best gal pal!) would describe me as…
Q: My favorite girl crush is… because…
A: Sally Mustang because she is what free spirited looks like… Happy, wild, woman!
Q: My go-to beverage order is…
A: I’m not that into alcohol anymore (those days are gone) but I can’t survive a day without a nice warming chai tea to kick me into gear!
Q: One book I’ve read that I’ve considered life changing is…
A: Books have never really been my cup of tea. I’ve just never really enjoyed reading.
