Q&A: Your Platter Matters with Megan Fernandez
Megan is the 'Platter Queen' and became that way by buying up the supermarket and styling it for fun! We talk all things platters, family, time out collecting sea shells and the power of positive feedback!
Q: Megan, you’re one seriously creative soul, tell us all about your mouth-watering business.
A: Your platter matters is a new age style of catering. We specialise in gourmet grazing tables from small boards to large 10 metre tables, all full of glorious food!
We first stumbled across the idea after a birthday party I had. I was too slack to cook ( way more interested in socialising) but still needed to feed my guests, so I decided to buy half the shopping centre and display it like a rustic medieval feast, I loved the set up. I couldn’t stop putting things on the table and our friends didn’t stop talking about it for weeks later. That’s how the style was born!
I spent a few days tossing up ideas for names, originally I thought ‘Platterpuss’, haha! I’m a massive cat lover, but thank God I chose ‘Your Platter Matters’ instead. After that, as the weeks rolled past, I slowly started ticking off things to do. The beginning was easy as the passion behind it all, drove itself, I used any excuse to create platters. I took loads of pictures, made an Insta page and was so amazed at the reaction I got.
Almost four years later and we have grown it to the business it is today.
Q: You believe strongly about using locally grown, high quality produce, tell us why this is so important to you?
A: I am very passionate about using local products wherever possible and I like to support small family businesses. I can appreciate the hard work and dedication that comes with it as well. It not only supports Aussie families, but it’s often better quality produce, with less pesticides! So it’s a win win.
Q: When you are not developing luxe grazing tables and sumptuous food platters, what do you do to stay inspired?
A: I love the beach, Jacob and I often spend our little time off during weekends at the seaside, collecting shells and letting our busy minds wonder. This has to be one of my favorite things in the world to to do.
We are both social butterflies, so we try our very best to priorities our friends and family as much as possible. We also love bouncing ideas off our loved ones & getting feedback.
We often do this by creating an event, any excuse to celebrate & decorate... even a full moon!
Q: You have been recognised as the ‘Platter Queen’, how has getting such positive and encouraging feedback, impacted your personal and professional growth?
A: I’m a Leo so I thrive off this sort of positive feedback.
I need some sort of appreciation to stimulate me, this is what has helped push me to grow “Your Platter Matters”, to what it is today. I also want to keep trying new ways to get a WOW factor from people. So I keep improving each graze where I can & trying new things.
I can’t thank my loved ones and followers enough for making me feel warm and fuzzy inside and showing me that it’s worth all the sacrifices I have made.
Q: Have you learnt anything surprising along the way?
A: Yes, A LOT! I’ve learned so many things about myself along the way. I’ve had many challenging moments on this journey and managed to push through, but most weeks the challenges still present themselves.
I’ve learned to deal with more stress than I thought I could deal with (not without many tantrums & bitten nails hahaha) and have got through and come out much wiser and stronger for it. I have also learned not to react to everything too emotionally. I am quite an emotional gal, so this is hard at times. Some things are just business and I need to remind myself of that often, especially in our world of social media.
Q: Many of our fellow launch gals are wanting more freedom and positivity in their lives but struggle with gaining the confidence to take that next step, do you have any advice to help them move forward?
A: Go for it gals! What’s the absolute worst thing that could happen? If it doesn’t turn out as you had hoped for and you are back at step one, at least you tried! It’s better to have tried rather than just talking about it. Be a doer! The only thing that makes your dream become impossible is you own fear of failure.
Just for a bit of fun!
Q: When I face a big challenge…
A: Run a bath, play some relaxing music, pour a glass of wine and try to work out how I can overcome it. Sometimes I may have a cry, but I try not to dwell on the problem for too long and rather try to focus my mind on the solution.
Q: The most courageous thing I’ve ever done as a woman is…
A: Travelling overseas on my own when I was single. It was scary at the time but one of the best things I’ve done. I felt extremely empowered knowing that I could do it all alone.
Q: The best piece of advice I’ve ever been given is…
A: Don’t worry about things that haven't happened yet. ‘Worrying is like walking around for an umbrella waiting for it to rain’. This quote my Mum told me years ago and it has stayed stuck in my mind. I am such a stress head at times so this relates to me.
Q: My BGP (best gal pal!) would describe me as…
A: Creative, generous, bubbly and soft hearted.
Q: My favorite girl crush is… because…
A: My muse at the moment is Belle Lucia.
Q: My go-to beverage order is…
A: MOJITO, I’m a sucker for Mojitos, we even had a mojito bar at our wedding. Any flavour will do but I will usually opt for lycee or passionfruit.
Q: My favorite quote is…
A: In order to be irreplaceable, you must also be different.
